Expert Reply:

Well a breakaway kit like the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with Built-In Battery Charger # 20400 will need to be installed on the trailer, and the actual switch you're referring to could be installed in a number of ways.

The most common are to have the pull pin routed through the safety chain pocket and re-plugged into the switch or you can attach the cable loop through a bumper clevis if there is one. You'll just want to make sure that you don't loop the cable on the hitch ball as the cable could be bounced off while the vehicle is moving.

Also, the pin must be facing the rear of the vehicle, directly behind the location of the cable on your vehicle. If not, it may cause Break-Away Switch failure.
