Generally with an LED light like the # MCL44AB, it would be exactly as you said, black to black and white to white. If the lights are not working at all, the first thing you will want to do is check your ground. Ensure that your ground is connected to good clean metal, free of any paint or corrosion. The # MCL44AB lights have their own ground wire, so I recommend trying to ground each light individually. A bad ground would certainly explain the issue.
If it is not a bad ground, I recommend going in with a wire tester like # PTW2993. You can probe the black wire to ensure you are getting proper 12v power to the light. Also, wire colors on a trailer/light are not always universal. It may be worthwhile to go in with a tester to determine wire function. If you can ground each light individually, and verify you are getting 12v, this should resolve the issue. If it does not, you may be dealing with some bad lights.
