Adding An LED Backup Light To A Trailer

Question:

I want to add LED backup light to a trailer, right now the trailer is using Round 5 wire connector and a center post, I assume is ground. That works turn signals, tail and brake lights. Backups lights on trailer do not work with the way it is setup. That’s O.K. I want to use a flat connector, only for the purpose to connect wires from backup switch to trailer mounted independent LED backup light. It has a red and black wire, one ground black and one red hot wire. The flat connector is a 4 wire, white ground wire and standard color coded wires. Can I piggyback onto the hot wire at the backup switch on towing pickup and run it to the backup light,on trailer, red wire, run the black wire from the LED light to a ground. Note on backup light says, LED Lamps are polarity sensitive: red to positive, black to neg ground. Will this work?

Expert Reply:

Yes, you certainly can connect the backup light wire to the reverse light on your pickup. Just as you said the red wire to power and the black to a ground. The LED light being polarity sensitive will not be an issue. You wont damage them if you mistakenly wire them wrong, they just wont work.
