Recommended Ladder Rack Options For A 1996 Toyota Tacoma Hauling Kayaks And Canoes

Question:

I have a standard cab 1st gen Tacoma. Can I install a single roof rack over the cab and a single ladder rack in the rear of the truck bed. Goal is to carry a 17’ canoe and 17’ kayak. Any thoughts on how best to do this?

Since there isn't a compatible roof rack fit available for your 1996 Toyota Tacoma the only way to get a mounting point above the cab would be to use a cabover ladder rack like the Erickson Over-The-Cab Truck Bed Ladder Rack # EM07707. These racks are bit noisy on the road and don't offer much adjustability so there is also the Thule TracRac SR Sliding Truck Bed Ladder Rack w/ Cantilever # TH43001XT-600EX. This rack sits on a base that will allow you to move the towers around to fit different needs. This rack also has built in slots to attach load stops and kayak/canoe carriers.

I've attached review videos below for both racks so you can get a better idea of how these would look/work for your situation. If you have any other preferences or want to explore some other options just let me know what you think.
