How to Choose Correct Replacement Axle for a 2008 American Freedom Go Anywhere Toy Hauler

Question:

I need to replace the axle on my 2008 American Freedom 14 toy hauler. Looking to stick with a straight axle. The hubs and brakes are relatively new, so just want to swap them over unless it doesnt make sense to do that. Current hub pattern is 5 x 4.5. Would like to know what my options are. Doing a search comes up with a bunch of axles of widely varying lengths. What is the weight rating of the OEM axle? I assume that it is possible to upgrade to a heavier duty axle, correct? TIA for the help.

To replace the axle on your 2008 American Freedom Toy Hauler we need to confirm the weight capacity and dimensions of your axle. You should be able to find a weight rating either on the spec sticker on your trailer or on a label in the middle of the axle.

Once we know the weight rating we can then take the hub-face and spring-center dimensions (see attached) to make sure the replacement axle will fit correctly.

You can potentially go up a size for your axle but it really depends on what you currently have because a larger axle could fit with a larger hub which would then mean you need to upgrade your wheels and tires so it's typically best to just stick with a replacement that's the same weight rating as your current axle.
