Solution For Replacing Damaged Axles With 3,500 lb System
Question:
Hi there . I have a 6 x 12 windward cargo trailer . . I have a sling axle I believe it’s called . It is not straight but has an arm extending down where the wheel attaches . My sling section was bent when the trailer jumped a curb ! I would like to replace the entire axle whether it’s a straight or a sling axle . Seems to be 25 and a half from center eye to eye on the leaf spring . Hub face to hub face 85 and a half and a 4 and a half inch stud pattern I have a five lug wheel and a 2 inch axle . My leaf springs sit on top of my axle . Does it matter if it’s on top now and if the new axle has stings that attach to the bottom . I need to buy a heavier duty axle 3500 lb as mine is only 2500 lb at present . I don’t know anything about trailer axles and so hope you can point me in the right direction . I have removed my entire axle by removing the 4 bolts that hold the leaf springs . What do I do plz help I need my trailer on the road ASAP . I will buy the axle from you , whatever you set me up with . I trust your expertise regarding my needs. Looking forward to a response !!

First, thanks for all that info it was perfect. As for the axle though, unfortunately we don't have any with the dimensions you need. So that leaves a couple options - one is to have an axle fabricated at a local metal/fabrication shop, and the other is to use a couple of the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension w Idler Hubs - Standard Duty - No Drop - 5 on 4-1/2 - 3,500 lbs # A35RS545.
These will work so long as your trailer has a crossmember (a beam across the width of the trailer); if it doesn't you can retrofit it with one or add a support by running a piece of 2" x 2" steel tubing through the square holes cut into the Timbrens. You could also add a steel reinforcement bracket to the inside of the trailer frame.
While this option is certainly more pricey, I did want to at least give you the option to consider. It also has the benefit of eliminating suspension needs like axles and leaf springs while improving your ride.
