Why Is A Brake-Lite Relay Kit Needed To Flat Tow A 2022 Ford Escape
Question:
Is there any portable toad braking system that does NOT require the RM-88400 relay Regards toad: 2022 ford escape

Expert Reply:
The requirement of a Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400 is based solely on the vehicle's wiring and not the supplemental braking system. Since the turn signal overrides the brake signal in a 2022 Ford Escape you would need to install the relay regardless of which system you chose. If you use tow lights like part # TL21RK you would completely bypass your vehicle's wiring and wouldn't need the relay.
When it comes to portable systems my favorite is the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # HM39524. This system comes with a remote to monitor when the brakes are being activated in the Escape and also allows you to change your brake settings from the cab of the motorhome. The feet are easily adjustable to help get is placed correctly in front of your driver's seat and it also includes a charge line kit to keep your Escape's battery charged while you tow.
