Recommendation For Charging Trailer Battery Off Tow Vehicle While Driving

Question:

Hello, I have a trailer that I recently installed a 7 pin system into for a tow behind fiber glass trailer Im taking on a road trip. Im hoping to find something that will pull power to trickle charge and maintain the battery of the trailer while I am towing it on a 2 month trip. Reading online, I saw some folks just pulling power from the 30a power line on the 7 pin with an inline fuse, but Im not sure thats the healthiest method for the battery without a controller inline. Can you all make any recommendations on products that might be able to help keep things topped off and charged so I can avoid hooking up to grab power too frequently. Thanks for your help!

The Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # RED96FR is going to be the best option for charging and maintaining the battery on your trailer while you travel. The Redarc is compatible with AGM, gel, standard lead acid, calcium, and Lithium ion (LiFePO4) batteries. This will require a MIDI Fuse Kit # RED76FR along with the wiring and connectors for installing on your trailer.

Most trailers will simply use a Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 to prevent overcharging the battery. This is only recommended if your trailer battery matches your vehicle battery in construction type to prevent damage to the 2nd battery overcharging. If your vehicle is not set up for a charge line on the 7-way we have the Vehicle Side # RM-156-75.
