Why Is It Hard To Couple Up To A Fifth Wheel Trailer On Uneven Ground

Question:

I have a A16 16120 Curt’s hitch with a Reese sidewinder on my fifth wheel. Sometimes I have problems with pulling open the handle to unlock the jaws, worst when on uneven ground. If I can get the pin in the centre of the jaws by putting the thruck in neutral and applying the emergency brake it works, tougher to do on uneven ground. I have greased the hitch. If I get it right it works very well

Unfortunately this is the case with any fifth wheel hitch if your truck and trailer aren't on level ground. Uneven terrain can pinch the head a certain way making it hard to release the jaws of the hitch. You can try to adjust the stabilizers/landing gears on the trailer to help take the pressure off of the hitch head but it's not always going to be an easy task.

The jaws of the hitch will typically need to be greased over time, which it sounds like you're already doing, otherwise they can start to stick. You'll want to ensure that you use a manufacturer approved lube that's designed to prevent debris build up like white lithium grease # L11354 otherwise your jaws can get gummed up and prevent the handle from unlocking as well.

There are two grease zerk fittings located on the front of each jaw that you can use a grease gun # L30200 to fill. The jaws must be in the closed and locked position for the zerks to be accessible. I recommend also covering the hitch with a cover like part # CA80116 when not in use to protect the jaws from the elements.
