Wiring Harness Needed to Install Impulse Trailer Brake Controller in 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD  

Question:

plugs in the back of the controller but it doesnt have a plug in on other end just wires. Where do the wires go colors are blue, white, red, and black.

You will need to get the proper wiring harness to install a brake controller on your 2005 GMC Sierra. Otherwise you would have to do a lot of unnecessary hardwiring that could easily be avoided using the appropriate connector.

If you have a Hopkins brake controller use # HM47795.

The wire functions on the controller are white for ground (connects to negative battery terminal), black for 12 volt power (connects to positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker), blue is output to the trailer brakes (connects to back of 7-Way in 7 oclock position), and red is input from the brake switch (connects to cold side of brake switch).

If you do not get the proper wiring harness and choose to hardwire in a controller, then you will also need wiring kit # 5506 and may even need additional wiring. Going with the proper harness is much easier. I have included a link to a how to article that should help.
