Wiring A 2009 Honda Fit To Be Towed By A Fleetwood RV And A 2007 GMC Envoy

Question:

I have a 2009 Honda Fit that I want to tow with my 2007 Fleetwood Motor Home and/or my 2007 GMC Envoy. All three vehicles have separate turn signal light and brake lights. What parts do I need to get all of the lights to work corrected on the towed Honda Fit? The more I read and research, the more confused I become.

Wiring the different vehicle systems can be a bit confusing but once you know what wiring system your vehicles have and get the proper instructions, you will be able to wire the vehicles. Your 2007 GMC Envoy most likely has a factory 7-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle which is converted to a 2-wire system so you will need to wire the Honda Fit to work with that system. If your motor home has a trailer connector at the rear, it is most likely converted to a 2-wire system also. You will need to use a circuit tester, item # PTW2993 if needed, and check the connector at the rear of the motor home to be sure it is converted down to the 2-wire system. I am sending a video link that will show you how to tell the difference from a 2 wire and 3 wire system.

If your motor home does not have a trailer connector or the existing connector is not converted to a 2-wire system you will need to install a Upgraded Circuit Protected Taillight Converter Hardwire Kit with 4 Pole End, item # 119178KIT. This will convert the 2007 Fleetwood to a 2-wire system and will allow you then to use both the motor home and the Envoy to tow the Fit.

Wiring the Fit then would require a Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, item # RM-154, which will change the three-wire system on the Fit to a two-wire system when being towed. With this kit, the vehicle brake lights will function as both brake and turn lights. If you want to retain separate turn and brake signals on your Honda Fit you will need to also add the Tow Ready Converter # 118158, and 2 additional diodes part # RM-792.

I am sending a video link that will show wiring the # RM-154 wiring kit on a Jeep Liberty. The vehicle is different, but the wiring installation is the same.
