How to Pick out a Weight Distribution for a 1998 Dodge Ram towing a Lance Camper Squire Trailer

Question:

My Dodge 3/4 ton has been used to haul a Lance Camper Squire 4000 which weighs 2400lbs. It is equiped with air bags on the rear frame to level the load. We have purchase a 26 ft travel trailer weighing 4600 gtw and a hitch weight of 600 lbs. Can the air bags be used to level the load on the hitch or should a weight distribution system still be used?

Helpful Expert Reply:

Air bags will help level the load but a weight distribution system will actually distribute some of the weight to the front axle of the tow vehicle which will allow for better braking and handling performance and reduce/prevent trailer sway. If the gross trailer weight of your 26 foot travel trailer is more than 50 percent of your vehicles weight then I strongly recommend you get a weight distribution system.

It sounds like your trailer would be heavy enough for you to need a weight distribution system. The best way to pick out a system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup. You should note that includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle.

I attached an FAQ on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you to check out also.
