Will the Sunroof Support a Fully Loaded Thule Cargo Bag

Question:

We purchased the TH868, 13 cubic feet of storage if that also makes a difference in the cargo box. Our Acadia is a 2012. It is a leased vehicle however. We also have a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali. Im wondering if the cargo boxes are universal with GMC vehicles? Thank you again so much! I called the GMC dealership and even they couldnt answer my question.

Vehicle manufacturers do not recommend placing any cargo directly on sunroofs. The glass was not designed to support additional weight.

A better option for you would be to add crossbars to your factory side rails and use a roof basket and a cargo bag or a roof mounted cargo box. This would keep the load off of the sunroof and allow you to carry more weight.

Based on your photo, it appears that you have a GMC Acadia. There are different roof rack options depending on the year of your Acadia, so if you would like to send me the year, I will be happy to give you all of your roof rack options.

I have quite a few roof rack options for your Acadia that will not require any permanent installation since it is a leased vehicle. Two options that I recommend for you are the Thule SquareBar Roof Rack or the Thule AeroBlade Edge Roof Rack, # TH7501-TH7502. The SquareBar roof rack consists of the Thule 47 inch Steel SquareBars, # TH712200 and theEvo raised rail feet, part # TH710401. The AeroBlade Edge uses aluminum crossbars and dramatically decreases wind noise and drag. I prefer the AeroBlade Edge roof racks because they give more of an OEM appearance. They also wrap around the factory side rails of your Acadia. I have attached videos for both of these roof racks on a 2012 GMC Acadia for you to check out. With these roof racks, you could use the Thule Canyon Roof Basket XT, # TH859XT. There are several roof basket and cargo box options available so I attached a link to all of them for you to check out. To determine if any of the cargo boxes or baskets will be compatible with your 2007 GMC Yukon Denali, we will want to find out what type of roof rack your Denali has. Again, all roof baskets and boxes require a roof rack with crossbars that run side to side. If your Denali had the factory roof rack, then most of the roof boxes and baskets will be compatible including the Thule M.O.A.B. basket that I referenced.
