Does Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller # 90195 in 2010 Ram Require Computer Re-Programming
Question:
I have a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab pick-up with 4WD and a trailer towing package. The truck has both a 4 pin and 7 pin connector in the rear. The truck did not, however, come equipped with a factory installed trailer brake controller. I purchased the truck new, so Im sure of this. I was going to install a Mopar factory controller, but it is much too expensive. The dealer said if I was to install a Mopar controller, they would have to reprogram the computer. The question I would like answered is if I purchase a P3 unit with the appropriate adpt., will I still have to have the dealer reprogram the computer? I do not know if the truck has a ITBM unit. Thank you very much.

You will not need to have your Ram 1500 computer flashed in order to use the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, part # 90195. You will only need to use the plug-n-play harness you referenced, part # 3021-P, to connect your Tekonsha P3 to your Ram under-dash brake control port. It may be necessary to instal some fuses under the hood to activate the tow wiring but if your Ram has the factory tow package these should be in place already.
The first section of the linked article covers the controller installation process for vehicles with a factory 7-way and includes photos of the (usually) blue under-dash connector that mates to the grey plug on the harness. The black plug connects to the back of the controller.
