Right Turn Signal on 2001 Ford Explorer Will Not Turn Off With T-One Wiring Harness Installed

Question:

Hi, I have the T-1 conector system installed on my 2001 Explorer and have had it installed for about 2 years. The wiring harness has worked great until I noticed the right turn signal on my truck had turned on during the night and wouldnt turn off no trailer was connected. I removed the fuse from the harness so the battery wouldnt drain until I can repair the wiring harness. I looked for loose, worn, or broken wires on the wiring harness, checked the wiring connection at the right rear taillight, and checked to make sure the ground wire was connnected. All the wiring appears to be intact. Do you have any tips on where or what else I should check on the harness to get it working again? Do the Modu-Lite converters ever develop a short in them? Thanks

If all of your connections look good, I would suspect that the converter box of the harness may be bad, especially if the turn signal on the truck turns off once you remove the fuse. It is possible for the ModuLite converters to short out. It sounds like power is back feeding onto the wires going to your right turn signal. You can test the the harness to see if this is the case.

First, replace the fuse on the power wire so power is being sent to the converter box. Next, unplug the connection for the right turn signal at the tail light assembly. Finally, using a circuit tester like part # 40376, test the green wire on the input side. This would be the wire that was running to the right turn signal on your truck. You can also test the pins in the connector. If you have power on that wire or on the pins in the connector, then the converter box is bad and will need to be replaced.

There are a few reasons why a converter box would short out. Possible causes could be exposure to moisture, a short in the trailer wiring, or possibly just a bad converter box. If you need a replacement harness, I recommend checking out the Curt T-Connector Custom Fit Wiring Harness, # C55345. This harness can handle higher amperage draws over the Tow Ready T-One harness. If you have borrowed a trailer or upgraded your trailer, it could be possible that the lights on the trailer drew more amps than the T-One harness could handle.
