Capacity of OE Roof Rails on 2008 Chevy Uplander

Question:

My van has the factory round rails that go front to back. I was going to buy a soft cargo bag to put on the roof and I was told that I would have to buy new rails. A dealer employee said that the rails on my van wouldnt work as they are there for looks not function. Why would gm put rails that cant be used on a vehicle?

I believe your dealer might be mistaken. According to the 2008 Uplander owners manual, the roof rack has a capacity of 150 lbs. This information is found on page 2-60. This assumes that your rails are factory installed from Chevy.

Rightline makes some excellent rooftop cargo bags in an 15 cubic foot (# RL100S20) or 10 cubic foot (# RL100R50) capacity. Although these and many other bags can attach to the side rails, we typically recommend you seriously consider installing crossbars to provide more attachment points for the bag and to prevent the bag from shifting on the roof during acceleration or braking. Crossbars can be installed using the Thule 47 inch SquareBars, part # TH712200 and the Evo raised rail feet, part # TH710401.

A tire mounted step like part # HE4040 makes accessing roof mounted cargo easier and safer.
