Will a Trailer Brake Controller Drain the Battery Too Much on a 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Question:

I have a 2023 Toyota Hybrid Highlander. It is equipped with a factory tow setup with a four pole flat plug. My lightweight trailer has brakes. Have you guys installed or recommended a brake controller for a similar or the same vehicle? I am concerned about the charging circuit throwing an error if I attach a lead off of the battery to operate a brake controller. Any suggestions? An individual at Autowbrake told me that if my vehicle has a smart alternator this might cause a problem. After reading a few things on the internet, it appears the hybrid highland does hot have an alternator but has a generator. But it does have smart circuits that monitor and charge the 12 volt battery.

In order to convert the 4-way on your 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid into a 7-way you'll need to use the 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7L. This will then pair well with the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 which does not require splicing into the vehicle.

In regards to power requirements, this isn't something that can be easily addressed as there are a ton of variables. The vehicle's charging system, trailer's brake size, number of assemblies, pedal force, trailer's load size, etc. are just a few of the many factors that would affect the vehicle's ability's to recharge the battery and the drain on the battery for the trailer brakes. As this is a hybrid vehicle, the 12 volt system is not up to the same level as a gas engine which you have alluded to but there is still some charging and battery monitoring. In laymen's terms, I really don't think a light duty trailer and load and going to drain the vehicle's battery to a level that it cannot replenish itself.

I don't have any experience directly with the Highlander Hybrid, but I have saw some other examples of some using the Curt Echo on hybrid models without issue so you should be fine as well.
