Troubleshooting Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Controller # TK63VR Not Working When Brake Pedal Is Pushed
Question:
I installed this brake controller #TK63VR and a 7-way plug #30717 on my 2017 Mini Cooper Countryman. I can confirm that the brake controller works when using the manual override. However, when testing the controller by pressing the brake pedal, it only works when the car is off and stops working after I turn the car on. Using a volt meter on the red wire connected to the brake controller, it shows 12.04 volts when the car is off and the brake pedal is pressed and then s down to 10.7 volts with the car running and brake pedal pressed. I can also confirm the line is 0 volts whenever the brake pedal is not pressed. Does the brake controller require a certain voltage on the red brake wire before activating and 10.7 volts isnt enough? Or could it be a faulty brake controller?

Expert Reply:
Since the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller # TK63VR is not getting 12 volts of power when the vehicle is running and pressing the brake pedal this is why the controller is not working. You can test for another wire on your brake switch that gives you the 12 volt output when the vehicle is running or we have the Roadmaster Universal Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751000. This kit mounts to the brake pedal and will send 12 volt power to the controller when the pedal is pressed.
