Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for Magic Tilt ALS 1723 Single-Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a Magic Tilt ALS 1723 2003 aluminum an boat trailer that has pre installed rotors tarnished with 13 inch wheels. Outside of the stainless too expensive what would you recommend for occasional saltwater use that will fit the 13 inch wheel? Thanks!

For salt water use stainless steel disc brake assemblies offer by far the best long-term durability and corrosion resistance. There are lower-cost brake kits that are not stainless steel that have special coatings to help slow the pace of corrosion, but no matter what brakes you install we always recommend a thorough fresh water spray-down as soon as possible after exposure to salt.

I checked the MagicTilt website for specs on your ALS 1723 trailer but I was not able to find information on the bearings, the bolt pattern of the 13-inch wheels or what brake components were supplied. Selection of a suitable disc brake kit requires that you know your wheel bolt pattern, brake flange number (if flanges are installed), inner and outer bearing numbers, and grease seal number from the parts on your trailer. With that information you can use the linked article to select an appropriate kit. Note that trailer manufacturers may not always use the exact same components from one production run to another so a check of the parts currently on your trailer is a better option than asking a dealer or the manufacturer.

If your axles do not have brake flanges installed you can either replace the axle with a suitably-rated one that has the brake flanges already welded in place or purchase brake flanges and have them welded to the axle by a qualified welder. Please refer to the linked article that covers much detail about the options and process for adding disc brakes to a trailer.

The particular kit you referenced, Titan # T4843300, fits 3-inch-wide channel tongue trailers, 3500-lb axles with 4-bolt flanges and 13 to 15-inch wheels with a 5-on-4-1/2 bolt pattern. This complete kit includes a coupler with electric lockout, hub/rotor assemblies, calipers, grease seals, bearing protectors, races, bearings and hardware.
