Are 4.80 X 12 Trailer Tires Capable Of Being Used On Long Trips With a Boat Trailer?

Question:

I am planning a long trip of 5,000 mile r/t with a newer EZ Loader boat trailer. It has 4.80 x 12 tires. I plan to buy new tires from you, but want to know if these 12 inch tires are practical for such a long trip. Trailer is rated for 1200 lb load, my boat with all gear is around 1,000 lbs. Any thought on whether this tire size is ok for a long road trip? Thank you.

Expert Reply:

Yes, the 4.80 x 12" tires are practical for for making a long road trip. I do recommend using the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C. The radial construction is best for long road trips and will help to keep the temperature inside the tires cooler. This will also give you increased tread life. The tire is speed rated to 81mph where some of the bias tires will max out at 65mph.

I recommend using a TPMS System # TM89FR to monitor the tire pressures and temperatures when you are driving. This will alert you to a sudden loss of pressure or temperature increase which can help you stop in time before the tire blows out and damages your trailer and or boat.
