Parts to Convert 5-Spoke Utility Hub to Modern Style Hub on 10K Trailer

Question:

I have a 10K equipment trailer that has two Dexter axles photo attached that are marked as follows: PR-FF SEC PF 6KPR GG SEC GG 12X2DX0 36-89 The backing plate is bolted, not welded, to the axle photo attached. The trailer has 14.5x8 Load Range F 12 ply tires on it rated at 2790 Lbs. The rims that the tires are mounted on are stamped “Made in USA DOT-T 14.5x6 MH Light. 3000 LBS Capacity MH Tire Use Only”. The rims mount to the hub with 5 bolt tab clips. I have been told that the tabbed rims are no longer legal. I don’t know if that’s correct or not. Do you offer a replacement hub/drum that will fit these Dexter axles and allow me to mount a standard 15 inch steel trailer rim? Thank you for your assistance

It looks like your Dexter Axle uses the 5 Spoke Utility Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-174-5UC3 so to replace that and your brakes you need the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K as well as the 12" Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes # TRU96FR. These will be exact fits for your system but the hub and drum kit comes with a slightly larger grease seal so you need the Replacement Grease Seal Set # RG06-090 for each axle on your trailer. Your older brakes should be 12" x 2" so they will work with the newer hub and drum kit, but from the pictures you sent in it would be a good idea to replace the brakes as well.

Your 8-14.5 MH tires have an overall diameter of 27.7" so for a suitable replacement tire with a similar weight capacity I recommend going with the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Tire with 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM32680. This has a Load Range of E (2,830 lbs at 80 psi) and a max speed rating of 81 mph.

I don't know if the 5-Spoke Utility-style rim is illegal, but it's definitely harder to come by so I always recommend swapping trailer equipment to something that's easier to find if you need to replace something.

Attached are some review and installation videos for you to check out.
