How To Install Trailer Brake Controller on 2006 GMC Sierra with Aftermarket 7-Way
Question:
I have 2006 GMC Sierra 1500. I want to get a brake controller for it. How do I know what I already have as far as factory and what I need. It has a 7 prong plug but no brake controller. Not sure if the plug is factory or not.

The trailer brake controller plug on a 2006 GMC Sierra is present on all models regardless of tow package options. Therefore, if you want to install a trailer brake controller all you'll need is an adapter plug and the actual controller for which I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885 and Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3015-P.
If all the wires are hooked up on the existing 7-way then you should be good to go. We also offer the Pollak 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector Socket part # PK11898 if there are any issues.
