How to Wire up a 7-Way Connector on a 1997 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton Cummins
Question:
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram HD 3/4 ton Cummins diesel in replacing a 7 wire connector where does the 2 wires that are hot all the time go? I have the following colors to work with: Red with silver or white stripe, Blue, Black, Brown, redand green stripe, Purple and Brown stripe, white/purple stripe. Colors do not match anything they ask for. The Red and silver stripe and Blue are hot with all switches off. The connector is OEM. What should the colors operate? the red and green and the purple and brown are running and turn signals the rest ?

I can help you wire up your OEM 7-way on your 1997 Dodge Ram HD, but you are going to have to do it by function and not by color. There is no industry standard for wire colors so your best best would be to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and test the wires and run them accordingly to your 7-way.
You would want a buddy to apply the different tail light functions of your truck while you test the wires with the circuit tester.
There should only one wire that has 12 volts all the time, I attached a picture of how a 7-way should be wired for you to check out also. You will see that only one wire should have 12 volts all the time. You might be able to determine what the extra 12 volt wire is by process of elimination.
You would want to use this picture as a guide for how to wire up the 7-way also.
I attached an FAQ on wiring for you to check out also.
