Poor Braking on New 2013 Palomino Columbus 340RK Travel Trailer
Question:
Bought this trailer in December of 2013, first owner. Actuating the brakes controller at low speed as directed to set strength, the trailer will not stop when the brake controller is applied. Had an RV mechanic check the trailer brakes, and the brake controller. You can hear the magnets working, but the brake dont actuate. Power to the trailer brakes is in spec, brakes controller is working properly. Still cant get the brakes to stop the trailer, the truck has to do all the work. Any suggestions as to where to troubleshoot next? Thank in advance.

First, disconnect the trailer from the truck. Then get a separate 12 volt battery and apply power directly to the brake output wire on the trailer side. The brakes should lock up. If they do not then at least we know the issue is on the trailer.
If the brakes are properly adjusted (there should be a slight but constant drag of the pad on the drum when the wheel turns) then check the inside of the hub and the brake pads for any grease that may have somehow gotten in the drum or pads. If there is grease it will need to be completely cleaned off.
Make sure that the brake magnet ground wires are attached to a bare metal surface. You may need to move the ground to a location closer to the magnets if it is currently far away. Moving the ground may be all you need to do to complete the circuit.
If the brake controller you are using has an electric over hydraulic mode then make sure you are not in it. You need to be in the regular electric brake mode.
It is unlikely, given that the trailer is new, that there is a problem with the brake magnets but you can test them to be sure. I have included a link to an FAQ article that should help.
