Can A 5 On 5 Bolt Pattern Hub Be Replaced With A 5 On 4.5 Bolt Pattern Hub

Question:

I have a trailer with a Dexter axle 5X5 lug bolt pattern. Can I swap to a Dexter 5X4.5 hub and install on my axle?

You'll just need to ensure that the bearings are the same so that the new 5x4.5 hub will fit the spindle. For example, the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84546UC3-EZ has the following bearings:

Inner bearing: L68149 (1.378" inner diameter)
Outer bearing: L44649 (1.063" inner diameter)

If you pull off your bearings there will be a number etched into them to identify them. If this number has worn away then you will have to measure the spindle to determine the bearing size. I've attached a diagram below to help you with these measurements if this is the route you have to go.
