Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers For Grand Design Trailer With Tandem 3 Inch Diameter Axles

Question:

I have a 2022 Grand Design 22MLE with tandem 3,500# axles which are 3 inch according to the tag on the axle. The slipper system for 3 inch axles includes 5,000# springs, which I assume could create a fairly rough ride for the trailer? I wondered if I would be able to reuse the OEM springs with the slipper bracket and keep the new set as extras in case I would ever break a spring? Would the two be interchangeable with the bracket and shock setup? Thanks.

It's a good question, but your Grand Design's double-eye springs aren't compatible with the bracket for the slipper springs (which have a different style) of the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit # RM-2460-2560. You're right that the 5,000 lb capacity slipper spring system would give you a ride that is harsher, but you can still improve the ride of your Grand Design by adding just the shock absorbers:

- Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers # RM-2460

The # RM-2460 say they are for "5,200 lb to 7,000 lb" axles but that is not a weight rating, it is only referencing the fact they come with the hardware to fit 3 inch diameters axles. So these will 100 percent work with your 3,500 lb, 3 inch diameter axles and will give your trailer a softer, more controlled ride.

The shocks will absorb the up-and-down suspension movement - which is often significant with travel trailers as you likely know - and they are also mounted in a manner - at a 15 degree angle - which reduces side-to-side movement of the springs to reduce sway.
