Will Adding a 5th Airborne Replacement Pin Box Reduce Chucking on a 5th Wheel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2012 front living 5th wheel Montana. Will the 5th airborne fifth wheel king pin reduce the chucking? Is it easy to install?

The 5th Airborne pin boxes such as # 5AB-E510-710 will work to reduce chucking. It has a shock and air bag inside that will reduce the chucking and vertical movement though it will not completely eliminate chucking. The manufacturer estimates chucking will be reduced by up to 60 percent when compared to a regular pin box. That is a significant improvement.

As far as installation it is easy in that you will need to unbolt and remove the old pin box and bolt the new one in its place. This is simple on paper but pin boxes are heavy and you will need at least 2 other people if not more, maybe some chains or something to help hold it up, and take every precaution not to be under either pin box until the installation is complete.

I have included a link to the installation instructions for this pin box for you. Replacement pin boxes fit specific OEM pin boxes. The one you referenced, # 5AB-E510-710, is designed to fit Fabex 500, 503, 765 and 770, Lippert 1716, and RBW 7028 pin boxes. If you have a different model pin box you can use the FAQ article I have linked that has a chart in it showing which 5th Airborne replacements fit which OEM pin boxes. Or you can tell me and I can look it up.

The pin box manufacturer and model number should be located on a sticker or plate on the pin box.
