What Weight Distribution/Sway Control System is Compatible with a Pole Tongue Trailer Adapter

Question:

Why will it not work with straight line adaptor. Looking for best anti-sway solution with my Triton trailer with a pole tongue.

The Reese Straight-Line Weight Distribution hitches use a dual cam system for sway control. This specific type of weight distribution/sway control hitch will not work with pole tongue trailer adapters due to the nature of the dual cam hardware which will not properly fit the adapter.

I reviewed a number of Triton trailers on their website and their pole tongue tilt trailers come in a variety of sizes and capacities. Weight distribution/sway control systems are available for a pole tongue trailer but before going this route I suggest you confirm few things on your trailer.

First, make sure that the majority of your loaded cargo weight is forward of the trailer axle. Also check that your trailer suspension components, wheels and tires are in good condition and that the tires are inflated to their rated pressure (trailer tires can carry their full rated load only when fully inflated).

If the trailer is not level with the truck and the front of the trailer is riding higher than the rear, you can try a new ball mount that sits lower in order to get the trailer level. If the trailer is level and you have the cargo weight forward of the axle and are still having sway problems, you can try a ball mount with some drop in height to pitch the nose of the trailer down a bit. This will have the effect of partly unloading the cargo weight from the back of the trailer. I have included a link to all of our ball mounts and also to an adjustable ball mount for you to look at, Draw-Tite part # 7390. It already has the tab on it for a sway control arm if you end up needing that and want to use a sway control kit such as the Reese # 83660 you referenced.

If you prefer to consider a full weight distribution/sway control system we do offer systems that will work with a pole tongue adapter like the Reese # RP3280. You can select a weight distribution and sway control system to use with the adapter once you know your precise fully-loaded trailer tongue weight in its as-towed condition and add to that the weight of anything in the vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler. The link provided will take you to our main page for systems; you can select an appropriate one based on your total tongue weight. An article concerning tongue weight measurement is included for your reference.

I have also linked a helpful article that may be useful to you as you consider you options.
