Using Thule Hood Loops # TH529 to Secure Kayak Bow and Stern Tie-Downs on 2011 Highlander

Question:

I have a 2 person ocean kayak that just lays around. I have a newer car and only just realized that there are no front/back attachments on the vehicle for the ropes. The bumpers are plastic. Tying the ropes to the sides wheelwells isnt an option because the car parts are made of plastic. I used to have a Blazer then Highlander, both with the towing package. The new 2011 Highlander has so many plastic parts but I do have the roof racks. Is the rope fastener on the front and back of the vehicle required for safe operation and transport? If I use this J-shape carrier, the kayak will only be attached to the roof racks. Thank you

For maximum stability and safety, the bow and stern of the kayak really should be secured using tie-downs. I completely understand the lack of available places to secure the tie-downs, but I do have a solution to offer you.
'Thule offers the Hood Loops, part # TH529 that can be closed in the hood and rear hatch to provide a sturdy tie-down point that will not scratch the vehicle or deform any plastic pieces. You could also consider the etrailer tie down kit that offers similar anchors that go inside of your hood or hatch without damaging your vehicle.

You might also be interested in a Tire Step, part # HE4040 that would make accessing your roof mounted kayak much easier.
