Can You Use Any Brake Controller With The Universal Installation Kit ETBC7 & ETBC7L?
Question:
Hello, can I basically choose any brake controller and get the ETBC7L and Im good to go towing any trailer thats under my 3500lb towing capacity? I want to tow a smaller trailer such as an R-Pod or a tent trailer. I have a 4pin connector installed currently. I also want to avoid running wires to the front of the vehicle. For my 4 pin plug, I ran the power via the rear 12V plug. Can I do something similar to avoid running the wire to the battery directly? Is there anything else that needs to be installed in the front? Thanks in advance!

Yes, thats correct!
However the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit for Trailer Brake Controller Installation # ETBC7L is more geared towards wireless brake controllers like the Curt Echo Wireless Brake Controller # C51180 as it only comes with a power wire that you'd run to the battery.
Whereas the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 is designed to be used with traditional brake controllers like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 as it comes with the power wire and the battery brake output wire that you'd run to the cab/battery.
As far as running power, you aren't going to be able to avoid running to your battery as this is going to require you to do so.
With that being said, you can use any brake controller you'd like once installed. A great option is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 mentioned earlier.
This brake controller has 5 storable settings, will work with trailers that have up to 4 axles, and features a customizable, easy-to-read LCD display that lets you choose color, adjust contrast and pick from different languages.
