Troubleshooting Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Maxing Out Brakes
Question:
When connected to two different trailers of mine, both with double axles, when brakes are applied they mostly lock up. This causes me to disconnect trailer to prevent damage. I tested plug on truck and the contacts all seem to be producing current when they are supposed to. But I think the braking power is producing too much current. Do you have a remedy for this?

Since The Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 was initially working makes me believe that it can be an internal issue in the controller, before you do that that I would check that the gain and boost on the brake controller is set correctly. To check the gain and boost, use the manual override lever and adjust the blue wheel on the left of the controller to set your gain, which is the new max braking force, then use the blue button on the right side to change between boost levels. If the gain is set to 6.0 but you're still maxing out you will need to replace the trailer brake controller.
When it comes to replacing your controller I would recommend switching to the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, which has an easy to read LED screen that has has a built in diagnostic function that can easily be read. The wire that you have on your P2 will match up with the P3. The P3 has 5 storable settings that let you customize the controller for multiple trailers, varying loads, or different drivers. The bracket for the P3 will be different then the P2 bracket but will be included with the controller.
