Recommended Upgraded Pin Box for Lippert 1621
Question:
Last year I picked up a FR Sabre 37FLH 5er from Campingworld and am pretty happy with it so far. This is, by far, the longest 42ft+ and heaviest 12K lbs dry RV Ive ever owned, however, its not my first RV nor first 5er. On my way home from the dealership to NC, I traveled over some pretty rough Virginia I95 bridges that caused significant bucking and chucking, even when slowing down below the speed limits. When I got home, I found a cotter pin that clipped onto the BandW Companion hitch head pin that attaches to the main body of the hitch sheared off. The cotter pin was gone and the hitch head pin slipped out of the right side slot. Without it, I had no problem lifting the right side of the hitch head off the hitch. Luckily, there was no damage to the pins on the left side of the hitch and it stayed in place, but it scared the ba-jesus outta me. To fix this, I immediately installed larger gauge replacement cotter pins and now check more closely the entire hitch before towing this RV anywhere. However, I also want to reduce the future wear and tear of bucking and chucking on the RV, hitch and my truck with a better pin box than the standard Lippert 1621 that came with it. Any recommendations for an upgraded pin box? How much less bucking and chucking would I experience after upgrading?

For what you described, I highly recommend the 21K rated Curt Flex Air 5th Wheel Pin Box, # LC369535 as a replacement for your Lippert 1621. The Flex Air drastically reduces chucking and minimizes bounce. The internal air bag and built-in strut work with the rubberized pivoting head to achieve a dramatically smoother ride as attested to by the high ratings feedback from customers that use this.
