Parts Need to Flat Tow a 1976 Toyota FJ-40 Behind a Motor Home

Question:

Looking to determine what i need or what would be compatible to install a towbar on the front of my 1976 Totota Landcruiser with a stock bumber. Is there a mounting bracket that i need to mount to the frame rails which run the length of the vehicle? There is not a solid steel/sturdy bumper across the front, just a tinnner metal bumper

What you are going to need is a set of Blue Ox base plates # BX88230. You can bolt these to the bumper but the bumper will need to be reinforced and will have to also attach to the frame if it does not already. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

You can then add a Blue Ox tow bar. I recommend the Alpha, # BX7380. This tow bar also comes with safety cables and it is a motor home mount tow bar which is considered the better and more secure option that coupler style tow bars.

Next you will need a lighting solution. The easiest to use and set up is a magnetic kit, # RM-2120. With this kit you will not need to cut into the vehicle wiring for it to work.

Finally most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. I recommend the Blue Ox Patriot, # BLU37TR. It is a proportional system that will apply the Toyota brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking.

If possible, be sure to check the vehicle owners manual for any information on flat towing the vehicle. You may have to contact Toyota directly for this information given the age of the vehicle. I have also included some helpful links on flat towing for you.
