Reese 20K Pro Series Slider Not Closing Completely Around King Pin

Question:

When I hook-up my 5th wheel to my slider hitch I’ve noticed that the jaws do not close completely around the king pin. Is this correct the jaws have about a 1 inch opening around the king pin, however when not hooked up to an RV, the jaws are only open about 1/8th of an inch. Is this safe? I’m concerned!

A 1" gap is not normal nor it is it same for your Pro Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Square Tube Slider # PS30121, which is no longer available.

I suggest that you check basic functionality by making sure that the jaws on your hitch can open freely.

If you're using a lube plate like # RP83001 that might also be causing your king pin to not sit far enough down.

It also might be binding up and moving your truck forwards and backwards might relieve the tension. You'll want to ensure that the jaws are going around the narrow part on the king pin.

Finally, if the jaws are not opening and closing freely, you may have either an issue with the hitch head, or it needs to be lubricated. If all this is followed correctly, and everything is properly lubricated, then there is likely an issue internally on the hitch and it'll need to get serviced or replaced by a professional.
