Weight Distribution for 6000 Pound Trailer Towed By 2007 Chevrolet Silverado
Question:
I have a 2007 Silverado 2500 HD and plan to buy a 2010 Puma travel trailer. The RV is 25 ft., hitch dry weight is 600, dry axle weight is 4430, total dry weight is 5030. I might carry an additional 1,000 lbs. Do I need a weight distribution hitch or can I get by with just some kind of sway control apparatus? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Weight Distribution is a good idea whenever the loaded weight of the trailer weighs more that 50 percent of the tow vehicles weight. In addition to eliminating the squat experienced when a trailer is connected, a weight distribution system has other benefits. Using a weight distribution system can lead to performance increases in steering, traction, and braking while also decreasing trailer sway.
For your trailer, I would recommend the High Performance Trunnion System part # RP66021. This system is rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 400 to 800 pounds. Since your trailer when fully loaded will have a tongue weight somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 pounds, this system would be perfect for you.
If you are experiencing some issues with trailer sway, we offer the Strait-Line System, part # RP66073. This system combines the weight distribution system I mentioned above with the proven performance of the Dual Cam Sway Control System, all in one package.
