Problem Lifting Snap-Up Brackets on Weight Distribution System

Question:

We have taken several trips with our new trailer. We are now having problems getting the safety pin in place correctly. We cant seem to get the lift bracket up far enough to the pin through both holes. In fact when we are lifting the bracket it just about comes off. We have tried tighten the bracket, but still cant seem to get the pin in.

As a first step, I would recommend reviewing the set-up instructions included with your system. Typically, there should not be so much pressure on the spring bars that its difficult to snap the brackets upward.

How are the spring bars situated once the brackets are snapped up in place? The spring bars should be angled back and downward from the weight distribution head, or at least parallel with the trailer frame, but certainly not pointing upward.

If your system is set up according to the instructions, you can ease some of the pressure on the spring bars making the brackets easier to raise. Leave the trailer hitched to the vehicle, and use the jack to raise both the trailer and the rear end of the vehicle by a few inches. This will reduce the load on the spring bars enough so that you should be able to raise the brackets pretty easily.
