Hitch Adapters that Allow for Trunk Access Using Hitch Bike Racks
Question:
Can this be mounted upside down? Would I still have the 500 lb capacity? The reason to mount it upside down would be so that I can open my rear hatch with the bicycle still on my tree carrier

While we do have a solution, you cannot use the Folding Basket Adapter # 52015 for use with your bike rack. This is because the # 52015 is only compatible with some Surco and Curt cargo carriers. Also, even if it was compatible with your tree-style bike rack, you would not receive the same 500-pound weight capacity. We also do not have any other tilting adapters that work.
As a creative solution, I recommend using the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender for Bike Racks # Y02483. This adapter allows you to swing your rack to a full 90 degrees away from your trunk. This can allow you open your trunk with no interference. However, it is important to note that the BackSwing only works with dedicated standard 2" bike racks and not a combination 1-1/4" and 2" rack. As far as weight capacity, it comes with a 250-pound maximum. When using the BackSwing, this reduces the overall weight capacity of your hitch by 50%.
I went ahead and attached a demonstration video of the BackSwing in action.
