Using the Yakima OffGrid # Y07138 with a J-Style Kayak Carrier on a 2017 Kia Soul with OEM Crossbars

Question:

I have 2017 Kia Soul with an OEM roof rack. I wanted to know if the Yakama Offgrid medium will fit on top. I also wanted to ask which jbar kayak racks will fit on top of the cargo basket.

In order to determine if the Yakima OffGrid Medium # Y07138, I recommend measuring the width and the height of your factory crossbars on your 2017 Kia Soul. As long as your crossbars do not exceed 3-1/8" wide x 1" tall, the basket will fit perfectly.

As far as attaching a j-style kayak carrier to your setup, we do not carry a carrier that works on top of the OffGrid itself. However, depending on the crossbar length you have, you can mount a j-style carrier to the side of the basket on the crossbars.

I recommend using the Thule Hull-A-Port # TH834. Since this carrier is a fixed carrier that does not fold down, you do not need to worry about the extra crossbar space used if the carrier were to in the down position. This factor minimizes the required bar length you need. Factored in with the 40" width of the OffGrid, you need at least 54" of usable crossbar space to use the Hull-A-Port with your setup. Also, in order to make sure your crossbars are compatible with the clamps on the Hull-A-Port, I recommend measuring your crossbars to make sure they do not exceed 3-1/8" wide x 1" tall.

If you find you need more crossbar length, a definite solution would be to use the Yakima SkinnyWarrior Roof Rack Cargo Basket - 58" Long x 23" Wide # Y07014 with the Hull-A-Port. I went ahead and attached a video of the SkinnyWarrior with a j-style kayak carrier mounted at the same time. This setup only requires 47" inches of usable crossbar space.

For straps to secure your cargo to the basket, I recommend using the etrailer Cam Buckle Cinch Straps # E98876-4.
