In regards to installing a trailer brake controller like the Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller part # C24VV on a 2007 Chevrolet HHR you'll need a few things, the first being a trailer connector like the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118407. This can then be converted to a 7-way using a kit like the Brake Controller Install Kit part # ETBC7 which has everything else you need.
The black wire from the controller will go to the battery with one of the circuit breakers in between. The blue wire goes back to the trailer connector. The white wire goes to ground and finally the red wire goes to the stop light switch at the brake pedal. I can't tell you exactly what color wire that is but the kit above has a circuit tester you can use to probe each of the wires at the pedal so you can find the one that is only hot while the pedal is depressed.
