The Prodigy P2 Brake Controller Shows NC When Trailer is Connected to a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500

Question:

Ive got a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. I have a factory tow package and a Prodigy P2 installed. It worked fine for a while but now it shows NC when the trailer is connected. If I use the manual slide for the brakes it works and all the lights work. Im not sure why it shows not connected. I also dont think the brakes work while it says NC unless I use the manual brake. Any help would be great.

There are a few things that can cause the nc code on the Prodigy P2 brake controller. The most common cause of this is a corroded trailer connector. I recommend looking at the pins on the vehicle side and trailer side connectors to see if you find any corrosion. If you do find corrosion, clean or replace the connectors as needed to see if that resolves the issue.

Another potential issue is a weak ground. Your brakes should have two wires coming out of the backing plates for the brake magnets. One wire should be connected to the brake output circuit and the other wires should be grounded to a clean, bare metal surface on the trailer frame. You will want to ensure all ground connections look clean and secure.

If the trailer connectors look clean and the grounds are in good condition, the final culprit could the brake wire itself. I recommend inspecting the wire from the connector to the brake magnets looking for any loose connections or exposed sections of wire. An open circuit could cause the nc code on the P2 as well. I have attached a help article on trailer wiring that should be helpful when troubleshooting.

If you are unable to find the problem or come up with a solution after following these steps, let me know what you come up with and we can do further troubleshooting.
