Thule WingBar Roof Rack and Cargo Bag Recommendations for a 2014 Mazda 6 Sedan

Question:

I would like a cargo bag for my 2014 Mazda 6 4 dr. car. I would like to bag to be mounted to Thule aero bar roof racks since I do not want the cargo bag to rest directly on the roof. What specific items do you recommend for the weather proof cargo bag at least 13 cu. ft., Thule roof rack system, and roof rack basket if required?

First, for a roof rack with Thule WingBars, you will need the following items:

WingBars, # TH711420 in black or # TH711400 in silver
Rapid Traverse foot pack, # TH480R
Fit kit, # THKIT1715

With this roof rack installed the crossbars will be 27-1/2 inches apart on center. The Thule Outbound bag, # TH868, and the Thule Interstate bag, # TH869, are both long enough (36 and 40 inches respectively) to rest on top of the bars without a basket.

However, depending on what is loaded in the bags they could sag in the middle and touch the roof. In that case a basket would be the way to go. But if you were going to do that I would just get a cargo box like # TH6356B. The bags and the box also have 11 cubic feet of storage space and are considered weather resistant.

For any roof mounted bag or box we recommend placing items that cannot get wet into plastic containers just in case some moisture finds its way inside the bag. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Mazda for the weight carrying capacity of the roof before loading.
