Can I Use the Malone DownLoader with Telos XL # MPG114MD-351XL on My 2015 Highlander with OEM Rack?
Question:
I currently have a 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE with a factory roof rack, and I would like the capability to carry two kayaks with load assist - the kayaks would be a Delta 12.10 41# plus one unknown additional. I also have plans for a new vehicle in the next year - potentially a new Highlander or a Subaru Outback. From perusing other QandAs, it looks like the Malone DownLoader with Telos XL, plus an additional Malone DownLoader is the way to go as the Hullavator Pro will not work due to weight/size limitations. Can you verify I will be able to carry two kayaks with the Malone setup on the vehicles mentioned? Also, please mention any vehicle features I should take into account if I know I want to carry 2 kayaks - for example, potential issues with a panoramic sunroof. Thank you!

In order to determine whether the Malone Downloader with Telos XL Load Assist # MPG114MD-351XL as well as an additional DownLoader # MPG114MD fits your factory crossbars on your 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE, it depends on the dimensions of the crossbars themselves. In addition to the minimum crossbar length of 41 inches long for both sets of carriers, you need to make sure that your crossbars do not exceed 3" wide x 1" tall. I recommend measuring your crossbars to make sure they fit within these parameters.
As far as limitations, the only potential concerns include antenna interference and interference with the sunroof with the bottom mounts of the carriers. However, you can adjust the cradles so that the kayaks sit on either side of the antenna in the "J" position. As far as a sunroof, we do not recommend having an open sunroof while you have kayaks mounted. This is mostly because of wind noise and the potential for the sunroof to contact the bottom of the DownLoader clamps. If you are set on opening the sunroof, it may take some trial and error to make sure the sunroof does not extend high enough to interfere with the bottom of the clamps.
If you have an idea that you want an aftermarket roof rack system on your new vehicles, feel free to respond to this answer to confirm the year/make/model/roof type of the new vehicle, and I will be happy to recommend a roof rack system that is compatible with the DownLoaders and Telos XL.
