Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a Subaru Outback and a 2011 Toyota Highlander

We have a Subaru Outback and 2011 Toyota Highlander. We prefer a trunk mount rack and not a hitch. Of the trunk bike racks, which one or ones would you recommend?

For your Subaru Outback and your 2011 Toyota Highlander, the trunk mount bike rack that I would recommend is the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 2 bike rack, # HRF2. Most trunk mount bike racks are not recommended for the Highlander because of the rear spoiler. The rear spoiler on the Highlanders is made of plastic and it cannot support the weight of traditional trunk mount bike racks.

The Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 2 bike rack does not put any additional stress on the spoiler and it is compatible with both of your vehicles. The straps will route over and above the spoiler of the Highlander, and the Outback if it has a rear spoiler. I have attached a review video of this bike rack for you to check out.

If you plan on carrying any womens, childrens or alternative frame bikes, I would also suggest picking up a bike adapter bar like part # HRBA-PRO. Bikes with small or angled frames can be difficult to load on a bike rack and cause ground clearance issues. This adapter will act as a horizontal cross tube and make it easier to load your bikes safely.
