Can I Change To A Larger Size Wheel And Tire On My Trailer

Question:

Hello I just bought a boat. The current trailer has 12x4.8 5 lug wheels on it. I was wondering can I switch those out to a 14” wheel? Is the lug pattern the same? Do I also need to change the hub and spindle out or can I use the same hubs?

If the hubs and spindle have the same lug pattern, theoretically, you would not have to replace them when going up in tire in wheel size. However, there are other things to consider.

You need to make sure there will be enough clearance on your trailer. The larger tire and wheel will come closer to your fender/wheel flares. For example, if you switched from the Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C, part # AM30670, to the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire with 14" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C, part # AM32156, the 14" wheel would be 2" larger in diameter and 4" wider. When the wheels are inflated the outer diameter of the old tire measures 20.7", the new tire measures 26.3". Please keep in mind that going with a tie with a higher weight rating will not increase your maximum gross trailer weight.

Even if you change the axles of your trailer you might need to change the hangers on your axles to ones that are taller. More than likely, you have 5 on 4-1/2 wheels on your trailer, that is why my example only covers this wheel size. If your wheel size is different, the same things will apply. You will have to determine the bolt pattern on your wheel. If you provide me with the distance between the top of your tire to the fender of your trailer, the distance from the inside wall of your tire to the closest part of your trailer, and the bolt pattern of your wheel, I could make a recommendation for you.

I have included product description links, video review links, and weblinks to determining your wheel-bolt pattern and the tire sizes to match to your wheel size below.
