How to Tell if a Trailer Bearing has Been Overheated and Needs Replaced

Question:

after cleaning the greasy thing i noticed that the bearings were a light colored brown. it that a sign of overheating? I placed the bearing into the race and seemed to be rolling pretty freely. I think my axels are rated at 2k lbs so if i buy a bearing/race with higher weight rating is this a better thing to do?

If the bearing is brown or black then that is a sign that it has been overheated and will need to be replaced. You will also need to replace the race. Replace all these parts on both sides of the axle at the same time.

Only certain races can be used with a given spindle and hub so it is not likely there are ones that will fit without also changing either the hubs, spindles, or both. Also, going to a larger size does not increase the capacity of the trailer. That will be set by the axles.

The best thing to do is to replace the bearings, races, and seals with the correct parts. I would need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers to get the right replacements for you. Then you will need to make sure the bearings are properly greased. I have included links to an FAQ and video that will help.
