Can You Install Tekonsha Electric Trailer Brake Controller On 2022 Toyota Highlander
Question:
Hi, I have a 2022 Highlander Limited with factory tow package. I called a local place that specializes in all things towing and they told me that new vehicles dont allow trailer brake controllers and that Id need to get one installed on the trailer itself Prodigy RF. That doesnt sound right to me since I see many options on etrailer.com saying theyre compatible with my vehicle. In a previous vehicle weve installed a Tekonsha and it was fairly straight forward, and I see that same one available for my new vehicle. Can you give me any information on this? If I can get the Tekonsha or any better/easier to install, can you guide me as to what I should buy? Thank you so much!

A traditional trailer brake controller can still be installed on a 2022 Toyota Highlander but since there is no factory trailer brake controller provisions it requires splicing. Therefore, most tend to recommend wireless options since you don't have to mess with any of the vehicle's electronics or drill into the dash. I recommend this as well, the Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller part # C51180 for the reasons above. This unit isn't permanently mounted on the trailer so no drilling required and it can be taken with you to another vehicle. You can also store it inside the vehicle when not in use for security purposes.
If you don't already have a seven way trailer connector you'll need to add one using a combo of the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # TK74FR and 4 to 7-Way with 4-Way Adapter part # ETBC7L.
