Can You Tow More When Using Weight Distribution Hitch on 2004 Dodge Ram
Question:
Hi I currently have a 5,000lbs hitch I bought from you guys a few yrs ago. It says 500lbs tongue weight. It also says under weight distribution 8,000lbs max trailer weight and 800lbs tongue weight. Does that mean that if I install a weight distribution/sway bar, I can go up to the 8,000/800lbs limits on my trailer? Thanks

You can increase the weight capacity of a trailer hitch in some cases by adding a weight distribution system like the Curt MV Weight Distribution System part # C17051 (Add 2-5/16" Hitch Ball part # C40030). If so, it will be printed on the label of the hitch as you noticed. That being said, trailer hitches are tested separately from the vehicle so you need to verify the towing capacity of the vehicle and then abide by the lower of the two ratings whether that's the hitch or vehicle.
