There are several cargo carriers we offer for your Highlander. Keep in mind that some of the carriers may prevent you from opening your rear hatch all the way, therefore limiting some access to the rear cargo area. I have attached a product page for cargo boxes.

I would recommend the Thule Pulse Large Rooftop Cargo Box, part # TH614, for your Highlander. This cargo box is constructed of tough ABS plastic which resists impacts, and is UV resistant. It measures 67 x 35 x 16 inches and features Easy-Grip clamps that let you mount the box easily to your existing crossbars. This cargo box has a capacity of 14 cu ft and a weight capacity of 110 lbs. When installed on your crossbars, also allows the you to open the rear hatch fully with no contact. I have linked you to an installation video for this cargo box.

To help with reaching the cargo box, you may want to consider a wheel step, like the Wheel Mount Tire Step, part # HE4040. This step easily slips over the wheel, and allows you to reach the roof mounted cargo box. It is made of sturdy aluminum and has a weight capacity of 400 lbs.

Looking for a good hard carrier for 2006 Honda Pilot. The Pulse looks like a good bet. What do I loose if I get a cheaper one. Poorer quality Can you elaborate here? Many thanks,

I do really like the Thule Pulse # TH614 and I think it offers a perfect middle ground between the lower-end boxes and the premium options where cost starts to outweigh benefits (in my opinion). If you start to go lower than this then you'll likely have a cargo box that's not as easy/simple to mount (basic U-bolt hardware instead of the Easy-Grip clamps that the Pulse uses, for example) and has a bit more of boxy design - thus won't be as quiet during travel.
