Recommended Base Plate Style For A 2015 Chevy Malibu
Question:
What is the difference between the direct connect baseplate and the crossbar style? I dont know which one I need to order.

Crossbar-style was Roadmaster's first design and has been getting slowly phased out so I highly recommend going with the Direct-Connect style to avoid any potential compatibility/product availability issues. For your 2015 Chevy Malibu 2.5L I4 Engine - without Active Air Shutter System you'll need the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-523178-5.
These Direct-Connect style base plates offer a quick and simple installation and have removable arms to provide a clean factory look when not in use.
To flat tow your 2015 Chevy Malibu you'll also need a tow bar, tow bar wiring kit, braking system, and safety cables. If you haven't already purchased these items then I have the following recommendations for you:
Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e74ZR. This tow bar is specifically designed to fit Roadmaster direct-connect base plates. It features non-binding latches and telescoping, self supporting arms that make connecting and disconnecting your F-150 on any terrain a breeze. It has an adjustable head that tilts up or down 3" and the shank has a built-in 1-1/2" rise or drop to keep tow bar parallel with road while towing without the use of a high/low hitch adapter.
Tow Bar Wiring Kit: If you have an LTZ model then you'll need the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This diode kit allows you to use your Chevrolet Malibu's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV.
If you do not have an LTZ model then you'll need the Roadmaster Universal Wiring Kit with Smart Diodes for Variable Voltage Incandescent Tail Lights # RO94FR along with the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7 instead.
Since you'll have to pull the LAMPS 8, IGN/ELECT KEY SYSTEM 22, and KEY CAPTURE 24 fuses to tow your Malibu I recommend installing some Roadmaster FuseMaster Fuse Bypass Switches to make it as simple as flipping a switch. You'll use # RM76512 for fuses 8 and 22, and # RM76511 for fuse 24.
I've attached a diagram of the fuse block below and highlighted the referenced fuses to make locating them easier for you.
Note: This solution is for keyed ignition only. Keyless models will need only a # RM76512 and will not have to remove the IGN/ELECT KEY SYSTEM 22 fuse.
Braking System: Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39524. This system offers intense, emergency braking or steady, smooth braking in a single portable system. Easily switch between proportional or full braking from the cab of your motorhome using the remote. The included charge line kit will keep your Malibu's battery charged while you tow.
Safety Cables: Since the # e74ZR already has safety cables you won't need to purchase any separately.
