How to Choose Correct Weight Rating for Trailer Tire

Question:

Hi how do you know what rating tire you need? Our trailer has ST205/75/r15 on there now and it weighs 3500lbs. Thank you.

When you're looking at the weight rating for trailer tires you want to make sure the individual tire rating is at least half the weight rating of the axle it will installed on (since you'll have 2 of that tire on an axle). Since the axle is a huge factor in the weight rating if your tires are rated for at least that much then you're good to go.

For example, the Westlake ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Black Spoke Wheel # WST44FR you were looking at has a load rating of D which is 2,150 lbs at 65 psi. This means when you combine 2 of this tire together it equals 4,300 lbs which gives you a nice safety margin for your 3,500 lb axle.
